Video: Tame Impala live @ First Avenue

Had a great time seeing these Aussies rock the sold-out main room of First Avenue. They have come a long way from their days playing the entry back in 2010! I definitely love Innerspeaker more than their sophomore album Lonerism but love the direction their sound has taken. They definitely have to work on their crowd engaging and interaction regardless of how cold Minneapolis crowds can be at times...

New P.O.S. album "We Don't Even Live Here"

Really excited for the upcoming release of the new P.O.S. album "We Don't Even Live Here" on 10/17/12. A complete tour de force sonically, WDELH is an amalgamation of his progressive lyrics and electronic sounds created by some of the most prolific producers in town [Ryan Olson and Lazerbeak] as well as some collaborations with DJs Boyz Noise and Housemeister.

Here's the track "Bumper" performed on City Of Music

BON IVER at Orpheum Theater (2 sold-out shows)

image from @trikno's flickr
Very excited to see Bon Iver at the Orpheum Theater this Tuesday and Wednesday September 6th & 7th. His new self-titled album will definitely make most of 2011 best album's lists and his live shows bring an honest and delicate rendition of his growing catalog of beautifully arranged folk songs. I hope to see you all there to enjoy and celebrate one of minnescene's favorite 'local' bands.

DJ Shadow at First Avenue July 17th 2011

I can't believe that it's been five years since DJ Shadow's last album The Outsider. A whole lot has happened in the DJ game since and even more since he released anything that captivated the masses like his classic Endtroducing..... one thing is for sure his live sets are always entertaining, specially with the addition of that crazy "Shadowsphere".

Ticket's and info at First Avenue's website.

This is my favorite Holy Ghost! song Hold On. Holy Ghost! is a DJ duo from Brooklyn, NY, formed by Alex Frankel and Nick Millhiser of the now-defunct group Automato.

Warpaint at The Varsity Theater! [Cancelled]

Update: Due to severe winter weather conditions, Warpaint is not able to travel to Minneapolis, MN and must cancel their show scheduled for this evening, Wednesday, March 23, at the Varsity Theater. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. Refunds are available at point of purchase.

The lovely and talented ladies of WARPAINT are coming to town to play at The Varsity Theater on Wednesday March 23rd 2011.

Their debut full length album The Fool is definitely one of the best female indie rock album on 2010. The band has been able to craft their sound by compressing a lot of their personal influences into a post-punk driven beats, melodic vocals, intricate guitar riffs psychedelic noise that's amazingly soothing.

Here's a few interviews and videos with Emily Kokal (vocals/guitar), Theresa Wayman (guitar/vocals), Jenny Lee Lindberg (bass/vocals), and Stella Mozgawa (drums).

New Gayngs video: The Last Prom On Earth

The Last Prom On Earth live at First Avenue with Prince on the sidelines, jamming to the song but he never got on stage. It would have been an amazing moment for those attending who had no idea he was even in the building, but classy as he is someone heard him say "they don't need me up there" and he just let Gayngs do their thing and have their day.

LOOKBOOK - RIP

Definitely saddened by the end of Maggie Morrison and Grant Cutler's collaboration Lookbook. Just wanted to share some of my favorite videos from one of my favorite bands from MPLS.
I really love their first LP release Wild At Heart [buy here], by far some of the best dance songs from any band in the local scene. I was looking forward to some of the reworked and new unreleased songs that they had started to perform live.

We live in times where those who blink miss a whole lot. I hope you were there when they were creating beautiful moments...I'm looking forward to what the future holds for Maggie & Grant.

..."and in the end, its never wrong

because who you love is where you are
i cut it close to let it out
my heart is full of this rage and this fear of doubt

over and over
these lovers they quarrel
you sink 'til you swim
it gets weaker with torture"
(Lyrics from: Over And Over)

M.O.'s Summer of 2010 Mixtape - Download

Just wanted to share with you all my new mixtape featuring tracks by some of the artists on constant rotation in my personal playlist. A perfect soundtrack to a very hot summer of lake beaches and biking in MPLS. Lots of electronic music, great beats and rhymes, indie rock, hip-hop, and everything in between including a remix of a gem of a song by Gil Scott-Heron. Here's the full playlist:

Rock the Garden 2010!

Here's a new video by MGMT the headliners for this year's Walkert Art Center Rock The Garden. See you all saturday!

The Current's own DJ Mary Lucia and the Walker's Philip Bither just announced the four bands that will be playing in this year's concert at the Walker Art center's lawn on Saturday, June 19, 2010.
Retribution Gospel Choir will open the show and will represent the local music scene, followed by Chicago's OK GO a band widely known for their inventive and entertaining videos. Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings are definitely one of the most exciting bands to see live. Their contagious gospel, soul, and funk sound is definitely attracting a new generation back to these forgotten genres...and last but not least 'The Management' aka MGMT will headline the show. Their new album Congratulations has sparked a lot of debate between die-hard fans, bloggers, haters, and new listeners alike by simply being more experimental and not a box full of radio hits like its predecessor Oracular Spectacular.

Get your tickets here for this year's concert.

Here's a little bomb Minneapolis!!!
A little birdie told me that this is this year's ROCK THE GARDEN lineup...shhh

SOLID GOLD [Fund Raiser @ 7th St Entry]

Come help Solid Gold raise some funds to pay for the gear that was stolen recently while on a tour of the east coast. Brooklyn I'm not proud of you (The gear was stolen out of their van just outside of a venue they were supposed to play at) making the band have "The mopiest ride back home" according to Adam Hurlburt the band's bass player.
It's for a good cause and only $10 so let's pack that venue and support our local favorites. Buy tickets here.

I'm really digging the song One In A Million, from Solid Gold's new EP "Synchronize" [buy it here] It's a perfect example of the sound Solid Gold has been able to craft & it defines the new IndieRock sound of Mpls.

Brittish Dubstep king Rusko will be opening the show.

Retribution Gospel Choir @ Triple Rock Sat. Feb 20th

I'm really looking forward to this sold out show from the Duluth based rock trio at one of my favorite local venues TheTripleRock.

From http://www.retributiongospelchoir.com/

Retribution Gospel Choir is a rock trio founded in 2007. The group features Alan Sparhawk on guitar and vocals, Steve Garrington on bass and Eric Pollard on drums and vocals. Alan also fronts the band Low with his wife, Mimi Parker, and Steve also plays bass in Low.
This is the video for my favorite song "Hide It Away" from the new album simply titled 2. Alan Sparhawk is truly as innovative as a rock guitarist can be and his rhythm section is comprised of a couple of virtuosos in their own right.
