Image from http://aworan.wordpress.com/2009/07/14/8-minutes-with-the-mars-volta/

Back in the twin cities and this time playing my favorite venue First Avenue The Mars Volta, Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez day job comes back with their amalgam of eclectic, brain washing, ear bleeding sound.
This is the best progressive rock band in the M.F. world.
I have seen them live four times now and every show has been a different experience...as Zack de la Rocha once put it: "this band is not worried about creating hits, but creating moments" and on Thursday September 10th 2009 we will be gifted one of those amazing moments. Be there!!!

THE MARS VOLTA!!!

The most intense/in-your-face/loud progressive band in the world visits Minnesota again. Monday April 21st at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium.
This show you don't wanna miss, if only for the "what the f*ck did just happen here tonite?" that usually follows a Mars Volta show.
I've seen them 3 times now and it's always a completely new experience.

Feb. 7: Black Blondie + Maria Isa + The Brass Messengers

BLACK BLONDIE
Maria Isa [with full band]
The Brass Messengers
DJ Shannon Blowtorch

Thursday, February 7, 2008
9pm
$6
21+
Pi Bar
2532 25th Ave. S., Minneapolis, MN
(In the heart of the Seward neighborhood)

Thursday, February 7th, the women of Black Blondie and Pi Bar bring to you a night of music in the spirit of Carnival celebrating Pan-African, Caribbean, Balkan and American rhythmic musical roots with performances by the Brass Messengers, Maria Isa with full band, and Black Blondie. DJ Shannon Blowtorch former dancer for local glam metal band All The Pretty Horses, will be spinning between bands.

The Brass Messengers, a massive, rowdy brass band play everything from gypsy brass styles of Eastern Europe, Music of the New Orleans Dixie Delta, their take on American country music, Latin American dance rhythms and Afro-Pop. You won't know whether you've stumbled into the French Quarter or you've just stepped off the train in Eastern Europe but somehow the kilt-adorning sousaphonist may just snap you back into the dancefloor called reality.

Maria Isa,
spitting fiery "Spanglish" rhymes and melodies will be backed by her full band entourage. Maria Isa and her band seamlessly blend hip-hop,dancehall and reggaeton feels with traditional Bomba percussion and dance breaks. Born to Nuyorican parents, and raised in St. Paul's West Side, this local revolutionary goddess keeps her culture alive.

Minneapolis based Black Blondie is a band in the purest sense of the word: the tightly knit four-piece unit collectively writes and performs all of their music. Black Blondie's daring frontwoman, Samahra, has the attitude and charisma of a punk rock diva. She has a voice that would serve any American Idol three times over but lyrics that shock with wit and intellect. You may be reminded of the poetic confessions of a Midwestern emo boy who makes you wanna rip your heart out and cradle it in your hand, but in the next minute she will inspire you to put on your hot pink stilettos, party the night away at a grungy D.C. go-go club, and sign a check to the World Wildlife Fund with a quill tipped pen. Bass player, Liz Draper, plays her upright and electric basses as effortlessly as any conservatory bred musician would, yet still sounds like a dirty hip hop sample. Kahlil Brewington's drums lock in as one with the bass and are laced with sophisticated dub and dancehall stylings. Tasha Baron attacks percussive Afrobeat organ lines and plays keyboard atmospheres reminiscent of the Sun Ra Arkestra. Samahra's vocals intermingle enigmatically with this striking and raw musical environment. Black Blondie's live show, distinctive song writing and innovative musical style has found them sharing the stage with The Roots, Jill Scott, Amy Winehouse, Meshell Ndgeocello, The Coup and J*Davey.

XOXO,
BB
